The Ash’ari school follows the way of the Jahmiyyah, which was then adopted by the Mu’tazilites, hence it’s called “the doctrine of Jahmiyyah and the doctrine of Mu’tazilites.”
They claim that Allah’s speech consists of words, meanings, letters, and sounds, connected to His ability and will, but they consider it created and external to His essence, through which He becomes a speaker.
Their statement that Allah’s speech consists of words, meanings, letters, and sounds connected to His ability and will is correct, but their claim that it is created is false.
They say when Allah called Moses from the right side of the valley at the blessed spot from the tree, Allah created the speech in the tree, so it was the tree that said: “Indeed, I am Allah, Lord of the worlds” [Qasas: 30].
They claim the speech is created outside His essence, even though it consists of words, meanings, letters, and sounds by His will.
This doctrine is built on denying Allah’s attributes because they believe affirming attributes leads to anthropomorphism and similarity to creation.
To avoid this, they denied the attributes completely.
These are seven doctrines, all of them false, that circulate in the world. However, these doctrines are not widely spread.
We have refuted them, and the most widespread doctrine is that of the Ash’aris and Kullabis, which are almost the same doctrine. Many scholars, including some Hanbalis and Hanafis, follow the Ash’ari doctrine.
Even scholars like Ibn Hajar and Al-Nawawi interpreted some attributes according to the Ash’ari way.The reason for this is that these great scholars of hadith were not guided to the correct belief of Ahl Al-Sunnah wal Jama’ah during their early learning years, so they thought what they followed was the truth.
In conclusion: They have great contributions in serving Islam, but these errors came from their interpretation without intentional deviation. If such great scholars fell into error and didn’t find the way of Ahl Al-Sunnah wal Jama’ah, then it’s necessary to clarify the path and establish proof. A student of knowledge might slip, but today, the doctrine of Ahl Al-Sunnah wal Jama’ah is the most widespread, and all praise is due to Allah.
