The day of ASHURA

The Sunnah Regarding the Day of Ashura

Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said:

“Nothing has been legislated for Ashura except fasting, by consensus of Muslim scholars.”

[Jami’ Al-Masa’il 3/276]

It is not from the religion of Muslims to make the day someone was killed into a day of mourning, and likewise taking it as a festival is an innovation. Everything that is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ about the day of Ashura other than fasting is a lie.”

[Jami’ Al-Masa’il 5/151]”

Everything done on this day – besides fasting – is a reprehensible innovation that none of the imams considered good.”

[Minhaj Al-Sunnah 8/151]

Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih Al-Uthaymeen said:

“The day of Ashura has none of the signs of festivals, nor does it have any signs of mourning. Therefore, displaying either sadness or joy on this day goes against the Sunnah, as nothing has been reported from the Prophet ﷺ regarding this day except fasting.”
