The Shahada (Arabic: الشهادة) is the Islamic declaration of faith and is one and first of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is a statement professing monotheism and the acceptance of prophet Muhammad as God’s messenger.
The Shahada is:
“Ashhadu an lā ilāha illa Allāh, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadar rasūl Allāh.”
Arabic:
أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا رسول الله
This translates to:
“I bear witness that there is no god has right to be worshipped but Allah in truth, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
The statement laa ilaaha illallaah is like a password to access Paradise. But just as a password must be entered correctly and completely to unlock a secure system, this phrase also has specific conditions that must be fulfilled for it to be valid. There are seven well-known conditions that every Muslim must understand and uphold — they are what give this powerful phrase its full effect and meaning.
Seven conditions:
1.Knowledge of what(shahadah) it means and entails – that none has the right of worship in truth, except Allāh.
2.Certainty that Allah alone is to be worshipped without any partner, which negates doubt.
3.Sincerity in worshipping Allah alone and not hypocrisy.
4.Truthfully believing in it. It is that the person is truthful when he makes the announcement of laa ilaaha illallaah – truly with his heart.
5.Accepting what it means and implies and not refusing it.
6.Submitting to what it necessitates and not rejecting.
7.Loving it and what it means, in opposition to hate.
Conclusion:
The Shahādah is the foundational declaration of faith in Islam. It is not merely a phrase spoken once, but a testimony that echoes throughout a Muslim’s life — through words, actions, and beliefs. Those who sincerely uphold the Shahādah by living according to its meaning will stand as true witnesses to their faith.
